Here he is in the prison cell where the rest of the Rogue One team meet him: What's the deal with Jedha? In the movie, the Bor Gullet looks into Bodhi's brain to see if he's a spy Saw Gererra announces that "the side effect is one tends to lose one's mind." In later scenes, Bodhi seems shaken by the experience.īut the book gives us Bodhi's internal monologue, shows the jumble of memories that Bor Gullet picks out, and makes it clear that the pilot actually has lost his mind. SEE ALSO: Let's discuss that epic 'Rogue One' ending What happened when Saw put Bodhi in the cage with that creature? It all started with a conversation about food, Bodhi laments: How did Galen Erso convince Imperial pilot Bodhi Rook to deliver his message to Saw Gerrera? Mothma is busy trying to force the Senate into a vote throughout the book, when she's not hanging a plastic tarp to use as shade outside her ziggurat on Yavin IV during rainstorms.īut at least she insists that Jyn Erso speak to the Alliance council during that crucial scene, and takes time for a few kind words to Jyn during the proceedings: "I won't forget what we did to you," she says. Mothma is described as an "idealist" with an "almost pathological need to make political overtures towards peace." Or rather, she hopes that any attack by the Rebels can force the Emperor to transfer some power back to the Senate: "She wanted a hearing not because she thought it would work, but because she felt obligated to try." The Rebel leader and former Senator is the daughter of a political dynasty who "decided to devote her life to studying history" at the age of 15 before being forced into the Senate. But the book does tell us he was a Separatist - that is, he was on the losing side in the Clone Wars. We still don't know much more than what Diego Luna's character tells us in the movie: that he's been fighting since the age of 6. Nail is quite open about the fact that she intends to kill Jyn. Not least because of that tentacled creature on the opposite bunk in Jyn's cell - a woman called Nail, nicknamed "Kennel" for the parasites in her jacket. Her sentence was 20 years, but she expected to die in five. The book finds her in her cell lamenting that "she couldn’t blame some petty dictator for ordering her dragged off the street and slammed into holding when she really, truly was planning to blow up his ship and steal his guns." It seems our hero has been in and out of prison since leaving Saw Gererra. SEE ALSO: We're all living in 'Rogue One' now Why was Jyn in jail? An early "intelligence update" found in the files of Rebel leader Mon Mothma insists there will be a "future weapons test of indeterminate scale," but notes that this report is considered "controversial" in Alliance council leadership - and that some analysts won't even sign their name to such a claim.Įven during an extended version of the Rebel Alliance council on Yavin IV, after the Death Star has already destroyed Jedha, some of the Rebel leaders assume that the Emperor is talking a big game in order to scare them: Sort of - but most thought it a conspiracy theory. Krennic later laments that he had given her "every opportunity to stand down rather than immediately signalling his troops to fire." Did the Rebels really not get wind of the Death Star in advance? But in the book, it appears he was talking to Lyra. When Jyn's mother levels a blaster at Krennic, the Imperial officer says "do it" - apparently looking at his troopers. Why did she take the wounded Cassian Andor to the beach? Because: Did Krennic encourage Lyra Erso to shoot him? At the very end of her life, on the beach on Scarif, she recalls Stormy one last time. The book tells us she called this toy "Stormy" - and it was precious enough to her that she is repeatedly dreaming about it. As she runs to her hiding place away from Orson Krennic and his black-armored Death Troopers, we see her drop a white stormtrooper doll. What was the deal with young Jyn's Stormtrooper doll?Īt the beginning of the movie, we see Jyn Erso as a child on the tundra planet Lah'mu. The novel is a brisk and entertaining read - but in case you don't have the time, here's a review of some of the most important pieces of light it sheds on the film.
